Finding another job is a job itself!  Putting together a well-thought-out plan is key to succeeding in your job search.

Before you begin your job search, it is best to spend some time developing a plan. The following are a few pointers on ways to tackle what many find to be an imposing process:

  1. Revise and update your resume as needed.   Always have a current version on hand.  Even if current circumstances don’t warrant an immediate change in careers, it is best to be prepared ahead of time.
  1. Generate an “exit statement” that distinctly defines the reason(s) you have for leaving a job (either the last or current position).
  1. Put together an assessment list of the following:
    1. Relocation-Will you relocate? Where?
    2. Company size?
    3. Companies of interest?
    4. Positions qualified for?
    5. Compensation Requirements?
    6. Anything else that matters in a job position…
  1. Appraise your skills:
    1. Ten strongest skills?
    2. Unique abilities as compared to others seeking the same position
    3. Personality traits to improve or change
  1. Network network network!  Make a list of everyone you know in three different categories: Personal, Social, and Professional. Try to make contact with all of these people and then network from information they provide. Be persistent!
  1. Apply to executive recruiters that specialize in the area you are trying to get a position in.
  1. If it is hard to find recruiters, contact the HR department at a targeted company and ask them which firm they work through.

  2. Check online job boards for companies you are interested in
